Garlic Chili Sauce Ingredients
- Walnut oil (or any light oil)
- Red onion
- Garlic ginger paste
- Red chili pepper
- Green chili pepper
- Ketchup
- Honey
- Sweet chili sauce
- Soy sauce
- Cashews
- Green onions
Recipe for Garlic Chili Sauce
- Dice the red onion and both chilis, removing the seeds if desired (keeping them in makes the sauce spicier!).
- Add diced onions, chilis, garlic ginger paste and oil to a pan, then stir-fry gently until the onions are soft.
- Add in the ketchup, honey, sweet chili sauce and soy sauce, then mix well until combined.
- Let the sauce come to a simmer, then top with cashew chips and sliced green onions, and serve! If you're bottling this sauce to save, add the cashews and green onions while serving.
Garlic Chili Sauce Recipe Tips
- If you don't have garlic chili paste on hand, don't worry! Fresh garlic, ginger root and a little oil are all you need to make your own. Just add 1 part ginger to 2 parts garlic and a splash of oil into the blender and you'll have fresh-made garlic ginger paste that's even better than bottled!
- Bottled sweet chili sauce can easily be swapped out for hot sauce and a little more honey. Add a half tablespoon of each.
- If you're making this recipe soy-free with coconut aminos, scale back the honey slightly! Coconut aminos are naturally quite sweet, unlike how savory soy sauce is, so it doesn't need as much sweetening.
Garlic Chili Sauce Recipes FAQs
Garlic chili sauce is made from a blend of onion, garlic ginger paste, chilis, honey, ketchup, soy sauce and chili sauce, with some cashews and green onions for garnish!
Garlic chili sauce (and chili sauce!) can both mean multiple things depending on the cuisine. Typically, however, chili sauce is a smooth paste-like sauce made from mainly chilis and vinegar. This garlic chili sauce, in contrast, is fairly chunky, sweet, and features multiple other main ingredients.
Garlic chili sauce contains a small amount of soy sauce, which is typically brewed with wheat gluten. An easy way to avoid this is to swap out the soy sauce for tamari, or if you're going soy-free, coconut aminos are a perfect substitute!
