What is Katsu Sauce?
Katsu sauce, or Tonkatsu sauce, is a traditional Japanese sauce made to pair with Tonkatsu, a breaded pork cutlet deep-fried in oil. It can be made in many ways from complicated and involved to quick and easy!
Tonkatsu Sauce Ingredients
- Ketchup
- Worcestershire sauce
- Oyster sauce
- Mayonnaise
- Sugar
- Soy sauce
- Garlic powder
How to Make Katsu Sauce
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine all ingredients.
- Whisk vigorously until completely smooth.
- Store, chilled, until ready to use- it gets more flavorful as it chills!
Tonkatsu Sauce Recipe Tips
- If you don't have Oyster sauce or can't have shellfish, fish sauce is a pretty good substitute. If fish is off the menu too, a little Hoisin sauce will do the trick! It has a slightly stronger flavor, so prepare to use a little less.
- If you're cooking gluten-free, make sure to check your bottle of Oyster sauce to make sure it doesn't already include soy sauce, which typically secretly contains small amounts of wheat. As for the soy sauce, swap it out with coconut aminos or tamari! Note that coconut aminos are very sweet, so you might not need to add sugar.
- Mayonnaise has a tendency to clump when mixed with thinner liquids, so make sure to whisk the sauce well to make sure it's nice and smooth.
Tonkatsu Sauce FAQs
Often considered to be the BBQ sauce of Japanese cuisine, Katsu sauce similarly combines sweet and savory flavors! It's a little tart and a little salty, with loads of savory flavor and sweetness to balance it out. It's similar to Worcestershire sauce.
Tonkatsu is the name of the dish Katsu sauce was originally served with. Katsu sauce is just a shortened version of the name, and is the same sauce!
