Thai Sauce Recipe
Who doesn't love a big dish of Pad Thai? It's a takeout classic for a reason; flavorful and filling while still remaining light, and full of all your favorite toppings. Plus, it's a meal so easy, you can whip it up in minutes for a delicious weekday dinner!
But, in my experience, the true star of the show for Pad Thai is the savory, tangy, sweet and sour sauce! It's the perfect combination of flavors to pair with any protein you can think of, and soaks into noodles to flavor them through.
Not feeling like noodles tonight? This sauce is great on everything! I love pouring it on cabbage and crisp veggies for a delicious salad dressing, or drizzling it over meat. Just be sure to make extra- you'll use it!
Pad Thai Sauce Ingredients
- Fish sauce
- Soy sauce
- Tamarind puree*
- Brown sugar
*If you can find it, Tamarind Puree is a tangy, sour paste with a flavor that can't be matched by anything else! You can usually find it at your local international market. If you can't find any, substitute with lime juice and a little more brown sugar.
How to Make Pad Thai Sauce
- In a small bowl, add all ingredients, and stir together until the brown sugar completely dissolves.
- Set sauce aside until the noodles are fully cooked- this sauce does best when added at the last minute!
Easy Pad Thai Sauce Tips
- If you can't find tamarind paste, substitute 4 Tablespoons of lime juice and 1 extra Tablespoon of brown sugar.
- This sauce keeps well and is delicious as a dip or used for salad dressing! Make extra and keep it in the fridge!
- For an extra delicious dish, sprinkle the finished product with crushed peanuts and an extra squeeze of lime juice.
Thai Sauce Recipe Variations
- Gluten-Free Pad Thai Sauce: Swap out the soy sauce for tamari - it'll taste the same, but have no hidden wheat gluten!
- Soy-Free Pad Thai Sauce: Instead of soy sauce, use coconut aminos. They're very sweet, so use half the brown sugar if you're using aminos.
- Vegan Pad Thai Sauce: Replicate the flavor of fish sauce without the fish with my Vegan Fish Sauce recipe! Use it in place of the regular fish sauce.
Pad Thai Sauce Recipes FAQ
Pad thai sauce is made of a blend of fish sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, and if you have access to it, tamarind puree! The puree is a delicious aspect that adds a ton of flavor, but if you can't find it, more lime juice and sugar will do.
Lime makes up the bulk of the punchy flavor in pad thai! Blended with sugar and savory sauces, it adds an acidic bite that really carries the flavor. Sweetness and savory saltiness come afterwards to balance out the sauce.
While pad thai as a dish can have meat added to it, the sauce itself only has meat in the form of fish sauce. However, this does make it a non-vegan sauce. To avoid having any fish in the sauce, use vegan fish sauce- or make your own!
