Homemade Salad Dressing Recipes
Before I learned to make homemade salad dressing, I can't tell you the amount of mostly-full bottles of dressing I would have in the fridge at any one time. A half-filled bottle of Italian dressing, a full but questionably old bottle of ranch, a blue cheese dressing that's a little more blue than it was when I got it. Oops!
And then I learned how easy salad dressing is to make. And not just one dressing- any dressing you can dream of! Once you know the basic ingredients for a dressing, you'll never stop thinking up salad dressing ideas.
Get ready to never buy a bottled dressing again. As it turns out, the easiest, best salad dressing is the one you make yourself, using only simple ingredients and never more than a few minutes! Homemade salad dressing is the best!
How to Make Salad Dressing
No matter what kind of salad dressing you're making, the ingredients will always have these three components: an acid, an oil, and flavorings! Combine any assortment of these three ingredients in a jar and shake it up, and voila- you've made salad dressing! Here are some great options for each:
- Acid: Lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, lime juice, orange juice
- Oil: Mayonnaise, olive oil, coconut oil, sesame oil
- Flavorings: Italian seasonings, sugar, fruit puree, red pepper flakes, lemon zest
Add your ingredients to a small jar with a lid and shake it well, and you've got dressing. It's so easy to make in small batches, you can make any of your favorite salad dressing recipes from scratch- and no more food waste!
Salad Dressing Recipes Tips
- You can make dressings in a bowl with a whisk, a blender, or my favorite method: a mason jar with a lid! Just pour all the ingredients into the jar and secure the lid tightly, then shake it up. The dressing will be done in seconds!
- Making your own dressing means you can make small batches personalized to every salad! Try new flavors each day to make your very own personal recipes, or find a favorite and make a big batch for later.
- Storing salad dressing is easy! Vinaigrettes last 1-2 weeks in the fridge, while creamy dressings like ranch last 2 weeks at least. Just store it in an airtight container or bottle and give it a quick shake before serving.
- Thick dressings are the perfect dip! I can't serve wings without homemade blue cheese dressing, and there's no snack quite like sliced fresh veggies and ranch dressing.

Creamy Salad Dressing Recipes
Decadent, creamy salad dressing is a treat I don't know if I could live without! It's perfect for salad, or a delicious dip for chicken nuggets, pizza bites, sliced vegetables, and so much more. And it turns out, once you try it homemade, you'll never buy bottled dressing again.
Salad Dressings Recipes FAQ
If you don't have any salad dressing, the easiest answer is to make your own. Mixing together oil, vinegar, and a little sugar or juice is an easy way to make a simple vinaigrette in seconds using easy ingredients.
Olive oil can work as a salad dressing, but the mildness doesn't always work with every flavor. To turn olive oil into an easy dressing, add a little vinegar, a sprinkle of Italian seasoning, and a squeeze of lemon juice. You've got a lemon vinaigrette in seconds!
The basic types of salad dressings are vinaigrettes, emulsified vinaigrettes, mayonnaise-based dressings. Vinaigrette dressings are the simplest, made of any combination of vinegar and oil. Emulsified vinaigrettes are blended until the ingredients no longer separate. And mayonnaise-based dressings are creamy and thick with a mayo base!
Homemade salad dressing is incredibly easy to make with just oil, vinegar, seasonings of your choice, and a small bottle or bowl. Combine the ingredients in a bowl or bottle, whisk or shake it, and you're all done.
