Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
I've been making homemade blue cheese dressing for so long, I can't even remember when I stopped buying it at the store. You really cannot go wrong with blue cheese dressing for salads or as a dip, especially for chicken wings on game day!
The best part about blue cheese dressing is just how easy it is to make. When I say it takes less than 10 ingredients in 5 minutes, I mean it. It's that simple!
For the best blue cheese dressing, I use a combination of sour cream and mayonnaise to make it extra creamy. Dressings with only mayonnaise tend to be heavier. Adding sour cream is the perfect way to lighten up your dressings!
Blue Cheese Sauce Recipe Ingredients
- sour cream
- mayonnaise
- lemon juice
- Worcestershire sauce
- pinch salt
- pinch pepper
- blue cheese crumbles
- fresh chives
How to Make Blue Cheese Sauce
- Combine sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper together in a bowl. Stir to combine using a whisk or fork.
- Fold blue cheese crumbles into the dressing.
- Finally, mince fresh chives and stir them into the dressing until completely combined. Serve and enjoy, or store in the refrigerator for a few hours first to allow the flavors to develop even further!
Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing Tips
- Always use fresh lemon juice for the perfect tangy flavor.
- If you are unsure what type of fresh blue cheese to purchase, any already crumbled blue cheese will blend nicely into the sauce.
- This is a versatile recipe; feel free to add more or less of each ingredient for your specific taste.
- Always store homemade blue cheese dressing in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Selecting a Blue Cheese for Dressing
The most important component of homemade cheese dressing is, of course, blue cheese! The cheese is aged in a temperature-controlled environment to produce its specific taste and color. You can purchase it in a wedge, or already crumbled, and the flavor is very sharp.
I suggest using whichever brand of blue cheese you prefer. If you are unsure or not familiar with the different varieties of blue cheese, use a more mild variety such as Gorgonzola or a Danish Blue. If you really enjoy the sharp, savory, and nutty flavors of blue cheese, go for Roquefort! This definitely wins the category for its intense flavor and creamy texture.
In general, when deciding on a cheese, give it a visual test, and remember your nose is your best friend! Visually, blue cheese will always have blue/green spots. Avoid blue cheese if it has white mold on the rind. Though blue cheese has a pungent smell, if it has any sort of ammonia-like scent, steer clear!
Blue Cheese Dressing FAQs
Other varieties of blue cheese include English Stilton, French Roquefort, and Italian Gorgonzola. Each variety will vary slightly in richness, tanginess, and overall flavor profiles, but each one is a type of blue cheese!
My recipe for homemade blue cheese dressing is naturally gluten-free.
My recipe for homemade blue cheese dressing is keto-friendly. If you are trying to up the fat content, add only ½ cup of sour cream and then add an additional ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream.
Blue cheese dressing should absolutely be stored in the refrigerator, as it contains multiple dairy ingredients. Never store it at room temperature.
How to Store Blue Cheese Dressing
Homemade blue cheese dressing should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. This is a perfect make-ahead sauce recipe for family gatherings, game nights, or holiday get-togethers!
Freezing Blue Cheese Sauce
My blue cheese salad dressing can be frozen, but the texture will change when it is thawed out. The sauce can be frozen for up to 6 months.
Here is a helpful hint when freezing blue cheese dressing: make the dressing as instructed, but do not add the blue cheese. Freeze the dressing, and when ready to use after it is thawed, add fresh blue cheese. This will help keep the sauce as flavorful as possible!
What to Serve With Blue Cheese Sauce

- Potatoes and blue cheese dressing are a fabulous combination. Try it on top of a Loaded Baked Potato or as a dipping sauce for crisp Air Fryer French Fries.
- It’s great as a salad dressing, especially on wedge salads, or as a topping on grilled burgers or sandwiches. Try it with my Loaded Burgers.
- Best of all, this chunky blue cheese dressing is perfect for buffalo wings! Try making wings with my Homemade Buffalo Sauce.
