Coleslaw Dressing Recipe
Growing up, over the summer, our family fridge was always stocked with a big white tub of homemade coleslaw. It was always there, ready to serve for meals, snacks, or even a quick midnight bite. And if I couldn't find any, you can bet my family was in the middle of prepping a new batch!
Needless to say, I carried that love of a good creamy coleslaw recipe with me when I had kids of my own. In my opinion, just about every meal can be enhanced with a side of coleslaw salad. Whether it's for a big barbecue, a light picnic snack, or piled on sandwiches or shrimp tacos for lunch, it's always welcome.
And the best part about homemade? Making the coleslaw dressing from scratch! No more too-creamy, too-sweet or too-tangy dressing. You can adjust it to be just the way you want it!
Creamy Coleslaw Dressing Ingredients
- Mayonnaise
- Apple cider vinegar
- Sugar
- Salt
- Pepper
Coleslaw Mix
You can make your own coleslaw mix by mix and matching these easy ingredients! Choose your favorites and chop or shred them into thin slices, and you're all set. Or, buy a bag of pre-mixed cabbage for an easy side!
- Green cabbage
- Carrots
- Purple cabbage (optional)
- Radish (optional)
How to Make Coleslaw Dressing
- If making your own coleslaw mix, shred the vegetables. Then add the shredded mix, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper into a large mixing bowl.
- Toss well until the coleslaw is evenly mixed, tasting to adjust the salt and pepper as desired.
- Cover, and refrigerate until ready to use. Coleslaw gets even better as it rests!
Slaw Dressing Tips
- Feel free to dress up your coleslaw any way you'd like! Add more mayo to make it extra creamy, your own favorite flavor of vinegar, or even a quick shake of cayenne pepper for just a little bit of bite.
- Bagged, pre-shredded coleslaw mix makes making homemade coleslaw a breeze! But if you'd prefer to make your own mix, it's super easy too- and you can mix and match your favorite vegetables to add in.
- When using freshly shredded vegetables, make sure to wash the carrot shreds before using them in coleslaw. If you don't, the juices will turn the coleslaw bright orange and add a distinct sweet carrot flavor.
- Don't be afraid to get creative with the cabbage! Any cabbage will do, be it green, purple, or something a little different like bok choy.
- Make extra, and let it sit in the fridge. You'll be amazed at how creamy and delicious coleslaw gets as it rests!
Variations on Homemade Coleslaw Dressing
Let's be honest, coleslaw is defined by its dressing! There are so many ways to make a good slaw dressing, whether you prefer it super luscious and creamy, light and tart, or just a bit spicy. There are a couple great variations, but here are my favorites!
- Creamy Coleslaw Dressing: The classic! This dressing makes use of mayonnaise, vinegar, and sugar as the main ingredients, plus a little salt and pepper.
- No Mayo Coleslaw: A light and tangy variation, this dressing uses vinegar, sugar, olive oil, and any seasonings of your choice such as mustard or celery seed.
- Asian Coleslaw Dressing: This Asian-inspired dressing uses mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar, but adds in mirin, chili oil, and a dash of your favorite chili paste!
