Avocado Sauce Pasta
Every now and then, I run across a culinary trick that changes how I view food. Recently, that trick was avocados! I've always been a diehard fan of avocados in meals, but I had never imagined how far-reaching their uses could be. Sliced and breaded for fries, blended into dairy-free ice cream, baked into bread, the list goes on!
And in this case, that use is making lusciously creamy, smooth pasta sauce without using a drop of actual cream. It's perfectly smooth, rich, and coats pasta beautifully! And with an extra pop of vitamins from the spinach and a salty, tangy bite from fresh lime juice and grated Parmesan, it's as tasty as it is vibrant.
Oh, and did I mention it's ready in minutes? Pop everything in the blender, blend it up smooth, pour it on pasta and let it warm up, and dinner is served! Try it with pasta, chicken, shrimp, or make an amazing avocado pasta salad; I promise, you'll be hooked.
Creamy Avocado Sauce Ingredients
- Avocado
- Spinach
- Garlic
- Parmesan

- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
How to Make Avocado Sauce
- Remove the pit and skin from the avocado, then place all of the ingredients in a food processor or blender, and blend until smooth. Thin it out with a little extra water if needed.
- Pour the sauce into a large pan to heat up over low heat, then add in cooked pasta of choice, and toss well to combine. Add in more parmesan, and let it melt.
- Serve with any desired toppings, and enjoy!
Green Pasta Sauce Tips
- Make sure to use fresh, ripe avocados for pasta sauce. They make up the bulk of the texture and flavor, and you won't want to miss out on how creamy a ripe avocado can be!
- Bottled lime juice will work in a pinch, but fresh lime juice makes a world of difference. Fresh juice will have a certain tartness and bite that bottled loses, adding depth to the sauce.
- This pasta sauce is a beautiful vibrant green when fresh, but be warned, it can start browning if left out. Be sure to serve it right away to keep a lovely color and texture!
Avocado Sauce for Pasta FAQ
Avocado pasta sauce is a creamy sauce made from avocados (of course), olive oil, garlic, parmesan, and a tender leafy green of choice! The creamy, custard-like texture of the avocado blends perfectly with olive oil to make a perfectly creamy sauce without using a drop of actual cream.
Avocados turn brown when left out in the air for too long, and this sauce is no exception. To prevent browning, serve this pasta sauce right away. To store leftover sauce, place a layer of plastic wrap or wax paper over the surface of the sauce and seal it tightly in an airtight container in the fridge. Alternatively, if the sauce is thick enough, pour a thin layer of water over the surface to form an airtight seal.
When properly stored, avocado pasta sauce will last 3-5 days in the fridge, or until it gets too browned. Make sure to store it securely with a layer of plastic wrap or water over the surface of the sauce to keep it fresh and bright until it's used.
This recipe for green pasta sauce isn't vegan, as it uses Parmesan cheese. However, it would be very easy to make dairy free by replacing the cheese with your favorite dairy-free alternative, or swap it out for a tablespoon or two of nutritional yeast!
Green Pasta Variations
- Avocado Sauce Pesto: Swap out the spinach for fresh basil and add a handful of walnuts to make this rich and flavorful sauce into a pesto!
- Lemon Parmesan Avocado Sauce: This ultra-easy variation just takes swapping the lime juice out for lemon juice! It's bright and fresh, perfect for pairing with chicken.
- Avocado Pasta Salad: Use this sauce as the sauce in pasta salad and you'll have a perfect summer picnic side!
- Avocado Sauce for Tacos: Don't be limited by only putting this sauce on pasta! It's also perfect for drizzling on tacos or nachos, or even dipping fresh bread in.
