    Cream Cheese Icing Recipe

    Nothing beats homemade frosting. I've been making my cream cheese icing recipe for years - it is the best. If I could choose, every cake and cupcake would be buried beneath a delicious layer of homemade cream cheese frosting!

    Really, though - vanilla cream cheese frosting is the perfect icing for cakes, cupcakes, cookies and so much more. It's so good you could eat it with a spoon!

    My recipe for cream cheese frosting is pipe-able or spreadable, can be used with food coloring, and most importantly, is delicious! Try it and you'll soon find yourself wanting to add it to every dessert!

    Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients

    • butter
    • cream cheese
    • vanilla extract
    • powdered sugar

    How to Make Cream Cheese Frosting

    1. In a medium-sized bowl, add softened butter and cream cheese. Using an electric whisk, beat for 2-3 minutes. Make sure to scrape down the sides halfway through!butter and cream cheese in a bowl
    2. Pour in vanilla extract and half of the powdered sugar. Beat for another 2-3 minutes, scraping down the sides halfway through.powdered sugar in a white bowl
    3. Add in remaining powdered sugar and beat well until smooth and creamy.whisking powdered sugar into bowl

    Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe Easy Tips

    • This icing works best if you are using a block of cream cheese, not spreadable or low-fat usually found in a tub.
    • Make sure you fully allow your butter and cream cheese to soften before making frosting.
    • Looking for a lighter, less sweet frosting? I recommend trying out my whipped cream frosting!
    • This makes the perfect cream cheese frosting for carrot cake. Try it out!

    Storing Cream Cheese Frosting

    You should never let your homemade cream cheese frosting sit at room temperature for more than a few hours at a time!

    • Refrigerator: Store cream cheese frosting in an airtight container placed in the fridge for up to 5-7 days.
    • Freezer: Freeze any leftover icing in an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. Before serving, let your icing sit on the counter for 30 minutes.

    How do you thicken cream cheese frosting?

    You can easily make cream cheese frosting thicker by adding in more powdered sugar. I recommend adding 2 Tablespoons at a time, until it reaches your desired thickness.

    Can you make cream cheese frosting ahead of time?

    You can easily make cream cheese frosting ahead of time - just follow the recipe as instructed and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Cream cheese icing can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days after making.
