Pineapple Glaze for Ham Recipe Tips
- Although fresh pineapple should never be placed directly on ham, pineapple ham glaze can be made with fresh pineapple because cooking it down makes it less acidic. I recommend using fresh pineapple in this glaze for the flavor!
- Pair this glaze with some fresh maraschino cherries on the ham for additional sweetness and an amazing flavor combination.
- If you save the glaze for later and find it's thickened too much, heat it up a little on the stove or in the microwave to loosen it up.
Storing Pineapple Ham Glaze
- Store pineapple glaze for ham for up to 3-5 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
- You can also freeze the glaze by adding it to a freezer-safe container with at least a half-inch of space at the top to account for liquid expansion. Allow it to cool first, then place in the freezer, labeled with the date, for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before using.
Pineapple Ham Sauce FAQs
Typically, you would not want to put fresh pineapple on ham as the acidity of pineapple breaks down the fibers of the meat and will make ham mushy. However, this is not an issue in cooked glazes, so you can use fresh pineapple to make pineapple sauce for ham so long as you cook it down as instructed.
Although some recipes suggest you do not glaze the ham until the final 30 minutes of cooking it out of concern for the sugars burning, you can glaze the ham before baking so long as you wrap it in foil before adding it to the oven. Glaze the entire ham, including between the slices, for best flavor. When using pineapple sauce for ham, for additional flavor, use a roasting pan with a rack and place pineapple slices and pineapple juice underneath the rack while baking the ham.
